Disclosure of Auto Accident?

In late August/early September, my husband and I went to a local dealership and bought a used 1999 Pontiac Grand AM, we bought it at a decent price and have had no major problems with it since we bought it.

In the last few days, my husband and I went down to inquire about trading the Grand Am in for a Jeep. My husband and I went for a test drive and dropped me off at work in the process. When he returned from the test drive to the dealership, one of the salesmen asked him who did the body work on the vehicle? It turns out that the vehicle was in an accident and had to have repair work on the rear driver's side of the vehicle. The wheel was patched and all the bondo placed on it was not factory. We have no way of knowing whether the repair was done by a certified mechanic or someone farting around in their garage to repair it.

Due to this accident, the value of the vehicle was decreased significantly and it has been established that there is a larger gap on the left side of the truck than that on the right due to the accident.

My question is, is there any type of law that requires disclosure of an accident? To the best of my knowledge, I was under the impression that if a vehicle has been in any kind of an accident, the dealership is required to let the buyer know.

Hmmmm. That's an interesting concept - - GM using Bondo at the factory.

I think GM might have a word or two to say about that.

Out of curiosity ... if the poster HAD asked the dealership whether the car had been in an accident, and was told it had not, would she have any legal action?
