Question

Doctor walks out on terminal patient

TEXAS
My brother passed away in November of liver failure due to metastes of small cell lung cancer.
When he first entered the hospital his oncologist was out of town and he had another doctor filling in.
The fill in called in a GI doc to try to open the bile duct. He could not open it with the first procedure and scheduled a different procedure the next day. He told my sister and I that without it, our brother would go into sepsis/coma/death.
The next day, his regualr oncologist returned and cancelled the procedure. When asked why, he said there was no indication that the bile duct was blocked (the GI doc had been in there and seen the blockage, and my brother was BRIGHT Yellow).
Anyway, the procedure got done two days later - on an emergency basis when sepsis was starting.
My sister remarked (mildly) that, "Maybe we should have done this when it was first scheduled."
The oncologist slammed his chart shut, said "I don't have to treat this patient." and walked out - never to be seen again. He did not deign to speak to our brother at all.
We are not interested in monetary compensation. We are well aware that our brother's death was imminent. However, we are horrified at the doctors actions.
Is there anything we can do? I have written to the hospital ethics committee and have received no response.
Any advice would be appreciated.

From lots of past experience I have learned there are always at least two sides to a story. He may have been very angry with the locum for scheduling the surgery without consulting him and you bore some of the brunt.
If yours is the only one, true version then the conclusion is obvious: even a doctor can act like a jerk.
Send a note to his office and tell him how you felt about his behavior.
