foriegn object in food

I recently purchased in the state of Texas some pre-made coleslaw from a major supercenter retailer.
The product was made by a company in Oregon.
In the coleslaw, after eating over half of the container we discovered parts of a "mixer" and a spring wich were covered with oil in the food.
My mother became ill as so did myself, however my mother has previous sugery on her intestines. The diarea and vomiting caused complications that required her to have another surgey.
We have photos and vidieo of the objects in the coleslaw.
Are there any previous type judgements or liability awards,that would let us know if this is something we should pursue or just let it go as bad luck?
