Fosamax hazard

What is the name of your state? ohio
After recently having a tooth pulled, complications led to the diagnosis of osternecrosis of the jaw. I have a sharp sliver of bone protruding from my jaw which is keeping the bottom of my mouth (under tongue) ulcerated. I've been on Fosamax for many years. I'm told this medication is the cause of my situation, and there is no treatment for it. Anyone else have similar problem? and what did you do about it? The condition is very painful and will take months to heal.

I have never had a patient with this issue yet (knock on wood), but the FDA issued this statement:

"If patients on bisphosphonates do require dental procedures, there are no data available on whether stopping the drugs reduces the risk of osteonecrosis of the jaw. The clinical judgment of the physician should guide each patient's management, based on an assessment of benefits and risks."

You may seek to discuss this with a medmal attorney...(but I do not know if this would be a viable claim)
Good luck.

A connection between Fosamax & osteonecrosis of the jaw has been found. In 2004 the FDA & the makers of Fosamax issued a warning to health care professionals. It was also suggested that anyone on this drug steer clear of dental work while on the medication. A person should let their dentist/oral surgeon know they are on this drug & voice their concerns & then decide on treatment. There have been recent lawsuits filed against Merck for being negligent in promoting the drug.
