Hospital Injury

I am from Tennessee. My father was recently dropped in the floor at a local hospital and suffered a broken collar bone and broken ribs. He was also "out of his head" for 4 months,(spent 3 in the hospital and 1 in a nursing home). My question is a general one, how do you arrive at a fair settlement amount? He has hired a lawyer, but the lawyer is wanting to talk to him about settling out of court. We are using the cost of the hospital stay plus the nursing home cost, but what about future problems that could occur from this fall?

Very complicated question which the attorney needs to address.
