Question

Hospital Policy

I would like to know who makes the policies up for a hospital? How can I get them to change them? I had posted here before titled ER Negligence? about a miscarriage I had in the ER department. I found out from a patient care rep that the hospital policy is that a woman 16 weeks or more would not even been looked in the ER but would be taken right away to Labor and Delivery. That decision that they made that policy could have meant the difference between life and death for my child. I was 15 weeks along I don't see much difference 1 week could make on the way a expectant mother is treated. I was in that ER department for over 25 minutes. Without even being seen. 25 minutes in labor and delivery is plenty of time to access the situation and see that what could have been done was done. I feel guilty because I feel like I did not do what needed to be done. I had no choice. The director of the ER dept. called me to tell me how sorry he was and to tell me that the ER was understaffed and had to many people that night to take care of in a 60 bed unit and how thrilled it will be when the new unit opens up in 2 years. I was appalled. How could he make excuses for why my baby died? Aren't doctors and hospitals supposed to respect all life and try to do all they can? If the ER is so over worked how can the enforce a policy of 16 weeks gestation knowing it could be hours before you are even seen? They had the power to at least try to do all that can be done was done and they did not even try. Lastly how can I get this policy changed??? My OB said that technically I had a late miscarriage. Having 2 children before it was labor. He even stated that there were medicines they could have gave me to stop it. I just wanted them to try. Please help me to find a way. Thanks.
