jail medical staff ignored doctor prescriptionWhat is the name of your state? california from inmate at Redwood City (San Mateo County) jail awaiting trial. inmate had been receiving medicine (ultram 100mg 3 times per day) however jail medical staff refused to dose inmate. Inmate was informed that if he had outside doctor prescribe medicine and paid for medicine himself, the jail staff would dose him. Medicine was delivered to jail; however, they have reduced dosage to half (only 1 tablet 50mg) and many times have forgotten to bring medicine at all. inmate has submitted medical request slips to see jail doctor but not granted. What is procedure to follow? Where to learn more about exhaustion of administrative remedies? Where to learn about wubmitting a writ to court to force compliance? How to take this casse to court? -moneyt |

| I don't think they are under any obligation to bring him 3 Ultram tablets a day. That's medication for the relief of pain and as such has other effects such as relieving stress and I my guess is, they don't want him to miss the 'jail' experience by being medicated past the point of facing reality. If this medication were in conjunction with medications for a physical condition such as broken bones or some of the chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, there may be reason to ask for an appropriate medication to prevent the aggravating of the pre-existing condition--but 3 Ultram a day for anything less--I don't see it happening.

| I work in the medical department of a correctional facility and I have never heard of any institution allowing an outside physician to perscribe meds for an inmate, let alone allowing an inmate to pay for them. I have ,however, witnessed uncountable attempts to obtain this drug by any decieving method possible by drug seeking inmates. No meds will be distributed by any institution without a written perscription by a licensed physician that is employed by that particular institution.Ultram seems to be a very popular drug on many correctional facilities limited formularies and inmates have had plenty of time to find out that this particular drug is one of the few that they can possibly manipulate the system to obtain. The real question isn't whether this person should recieve it,but rather, how did an inmate get access to the internet to post a thread to begin with? |

| Chump A few years back I contracted with a prison system's health providers to get Joint Commission status for the prison's health/clinic. The inmates had more rights than the employees, more free time than I dreamed imaginable, including 38 hours a week out of the cell, for recreation and exercise, for the death row inmates; a full law library with computers for their use with their 'case-worker's' approval (not all inmates, of course). I could not be prison employee--I admire you for your stamina. This poster said, "jail", and I am aware that during the initital phase of incarceration, before trial, jail physicians OK the outside meds if they want to and those medications are administered until the pharmacy that supplies the jail provides the medication. The rest of what you said is 'right on' about the Ultram and the abuse; thus my response they probably don't want him to miss the jail experience. ![]()

| Go chump! Moneyt must have an internet cell phone or blackberry hid around there somewhere. Heck I couldn't afford a computer, couldn't get access to a computer and couldn't even drink a beer in either Saudi or Bosnia. Believe me we were in lock up sleeping with mud and rats in one place and scorching sun the other. (Bored) However ,we could have all of the military tv dinners we could eat. (T-Rats). Jeez, I should try jail. Big difference though, my mates were some of the greatest men and women I've ever encountered, so it wasn't bad and conditions always improved. Keep perservering chump, my Sis and brother in law did another 20 on top of the military in your profession. Don't know why Sis wants to pat me down all the time (weird) he, he. |
