my father dies one week after doctor issues prescription My name is Barb, and I live in IN. My father has a history of medical conditions(he was a diabetic, and had the blood disease called hemachromatosis). He has been taking medications on a regular schedule for years and as long as he was persistant he seemed to get around just fine. He went to a doctor recommended by his family doctor (I believe that doctor was a diabetic specialist) for something to do with his blood-sugar level but was having no obvious signs of being in poorer conditions, he was getting around fine like always. After his visit with the specialist he was prescribed a new, and different, prescription which was a patch (I have recently learned it was a seizure medication) which he had never had a seizure before. From the time he first began using the patch he said he felt dizzy and drugged, kind of like being drunk(my father didn't ever drink). He continued to use it, as prescribed, and my mother called that doctor every day in concern of his reactions and was told by the nurse over the phone he'd be fine, and continue taking it until the doctor notifyed them. He seemed to get even worse and was in and out of consciousness, had involintary twitches and had to be fed by my mother. He couldn't even take a shower and slept in his recliner. Finally, the day before he died in his sleep, the doctors office said to stop taking the patch and they would prescribe a different prescription. He died the next day. The coroner declined an autopsy, but offered one at our expense. We said to give one and later on his family doctor told the coroners not to give one. Do I have a case against the doctor who prescribed the patch? |
