12 year old debt

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Texas

I live in Texas. I just received a call from a debt collector who informs me his company just purchased a debt of mine from an account I had from May 1996 to Jan of 1997. It is for $300. At that time, I lived in Illinois. I remember the company name the original debt was for. A cell phone or pager I believe. I don't remember anything else about this. I don't know if I paid it or not. The debt collector said that they purchased this debt in 2006 and have been trying to get a hold of me since then.

My questions are, should I just pay and be done? Is there a statute of limitations on collecting a debt? Why has this never gone on my credit report if I really owed it? Can they put it on my credit report now? I have good to very good credit. If I owe it fine, Ill pay it but how do I know if I really owe it? What would you suggest? What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)?

No one can answer that for you as we don't know how much hassle you might face and whether you are willing to accept it. Personally, I would NOT pay it without considerable effort on their part.

Yes, but the SOL in Illinois 'froze' when you 'fled' the state.

Not all debts are reported to the credit agency's.

Can they?? Of course they can.
However, it would be very simple for you to challenge it and have it removed.

Send them a very nice 'validation request' letter. A good copy can be found at: Sample letters for use in credit repair, debt consolidation, credit disputes

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport!
