25 yr old student loan

What is the name of your state?Missouri Nat'l Asset Mgmt contacted me by mail to cough up $27,000 for a 25 yr old student loan. Original amount was $8000 over four loans. I sent certified mail a request to produce the promissory notes and any judgements. A judgement was granted appox. 15 yrs . ago but it must not have been renewed because my credit is excellent and I have recently purchased a house. I understand there is not statute of limitations but they can garnish w/o judgement 15% under a 1998 law. They said "an amlicable settlement may be reached and the documentation is forth coming". Should I try to settle this by myself or would an attorney be in my best interest? Can they get rough with my assests after 25 years? This was a federally garanteed student loan.

Answer to your two questions:
1: Get an attorney prior to any settlement attempts.
2: Unknown .

The lawyer may request that you track down the judgement documents to see how this was rendered. Secondly I question the validity of this sudden recoup of funds after all this time. Normally a federal funded loan is open to collection thru :IRS refunds, state refunds, liens, garnishment, bank seizure.

Your doing well in requesting validity thru documentation.
