Another question about debt liability

What is the name of your state? Illinois

My father recently died and had no assets (he filed banktrupcy last year). I came from overseas, where I live, for the funeral. I decided to stay in America for awhile (I am a citizen), and am now getting phone calls from a lawyer's office about paying the debts he incurred from the facility he was moved to before he died.

There was a very small sum from his life insurance, but there were many expenses, too, after he died. If I am not mistaken, I am not liable for his medical bills, but how do I get the lawyers/debt collectors off my back? I know nothing of the laws in America since I've lived abroad for most of my life.

Thank you so much.

First: Welcome home, I regret it was under that circumstance.
Second: You are not liable for your father's debts. If there was anything in his estate, his debts had to be paid from the proceeds. If not, it sucks to be the creditor.
Third: What you need to do. Send each creditor a copy of your father death certificate and a letter informing them that there is no estate.

Thank you, debtcollector, for your reply. I will do as you suggest.
