Being sued by a hospital!I live in Michigan, Good afternoon, I woke up to a banging on my door. A big surpise to me I was handed a summons to court. Background, I had brain surgery in Febuary of 2004, I was off of work untill June 2004. I had some doctors bills to take care of. I had owed several hundred dollars for rent and bills and such. I had moved in September of 2004. I finally JUST got the previous rent and utilities taken care of last month (because of the tax return). Now i have this court summons stating that I have to show up in court because the hospital is sueing me for $2,600.00. (Twenty six hundred dollars...thats right!) The weird thing was a stamp shows that it was "received for filing" June of 2004. 4 months after my surgery. SHEESH.... THEY DIDNT EVEN LET ME GET BACK TO WORK AND THEY FILED IT! I have NO money! I was planning on paying them the money this summer after i get out of school. ( I work and goto school fulltime) What can i do. Is there someway i can just pay them without going to court over time? Thank you! |

| IAAL being helpful as usual (or maybe he knows you better than I)... I'd suggest you call the hospital and talk with their accounting department. Most hospitals do have "hardship" programs...perhaps you qualify. |

My response: Boy, this really shows how little you know about law, and collections. This idiot is sooooo far past "asking" for anything. He could have taken advantage of a "hardship" program a long time ago. Instead, he chose to ignore the repeated requests for payment and chose to ignore the hospital's suggestions for payment arrangements. Now, he's being sued. The debt is in the hands of their attorneys, and that's where it's going to stay. There's nothing that the hospital can, or will, do for this idiot as a result. IAAL |

| Hopefully, when congress passes the new bankrupcy bill for their corporate benefactors, we can push the medical-related bankrupcy filing rate from a paltry 40 something percent to a more respectable 80 or 90 percent. That will show those silly French culture influenced Canadians, with their embarassingly wimpy 7% rate of medical bill related bankrupcies, that the USA is still number one at SOMETHING! |
