Bogus Collection

Indiana.

I work for a company that does customer service for an independent oil and gas companies investors(private placements). One of the clients invested though his company. This week I get a call from an "investigator" who has been hired on behalf of "someone" and if I call such in such a number by close of business .... That contact was of course to a collection agency Coface Collections and lots of stuff on line about them. Next day I get a letter identifying the client. He is unhappy about the dividend he has received to date so he sent them something that I owe $8940.00. The oil and gas company is named and my name is in the letter. I called the collector to tell them he was an unhappy investor and I only did client services. He states that the client said "you misrepresented the investment" and I told I'm no salesman and never heard of this guy until well after he invested. The collector then asked me to send him an email stating all of this that I said so he would have a record. I don't feel inclined to do that.
What I am concerned with is this guy has sent this complaint to the collectors saying we owed him $8940.00. I have no idea where that number came from as he invested close to $200k. Im worried that with my name on this they can hurt my credit. There is no debt and the client knows it. What can I do to protect myself?

credit report?

have you checked your credit report? It should be pretty hard for them to report this to your credit without any personal information on you like your dob or ssn or address...
