Can I be responsible for debt occured while a minor?

What is the name of your state? Virginia

During the time I was a minor, I had a checking account. Because I was a minor, it was a custodial account where my father was the custodian. When I was 17, my father was in the hospital for a length of time and then passed away and the bank would not allow me to do anything (even withdraw, except by the ATM) without my father. I just left the account alone and it went $350 negative and then was closed.

I am now 19 and the bank has been trying to get their money since I turned 18 and has been turned over to several collection agencies. Does the bank/collection agencies have a right to collect from me now for a debt that occured while I was a minor? If not, what can I do to get these collection agencies and the bank to stop pursuing the debt?

Thank You!:

Yes, they can.

The bank would have let you make a "deposit" so that the account did not go negative.

They are entitled to the $350.00 of THEIR money that you used!

Now that you are an adult...it's time to START BEING ACCOUNTABLE for your actions!
