can they garnish social security?

What is the name of your state? Illinois

I am a 65 year old senior on SS. and a small pension. I have a loan with a finance company, but have been having real problems making my payments. I have been paying what I can, but not the full payment. They have threatened to go after my SS. check and my pension. Can they do that? I barely make it as it is.

They can't garnish the SS check.

In Illinois, it is my understanding that they can't go after your SS (as indicated by bdancer) or your pension payments if your retirement plan (pension) qualifies as a retirement plan under the Internal Revenue Code.
