25 yr old student loan What is the name of your state? What is the name of your state? Oregon
Back in 1979 I went to a computor career institute and received a government loan with a 6 month deferement after graduation. The school also had a gauranteed job placement program after completion within 6 months. When I completed the schooling, they were not able to place me in a job and after the 6 months were up since I had no job, I joined the military, which gave me a further deferement of 3 years. When that deferement was up, I did not hear anything from the school and did not know where to send payment. Upon checking into it I found the school had gone bankrupt and no longer existed. A short time later, my 1st Sgt told me that a collection agency had contacted him on my loan. I told him what had happened and he told me that if the school had gone bankrupt, the loan was no longer valid. A few years later, I started getting calls from more collection agencies. One of them told me that a government loan is not included in bankruptcy, and the loan was still valid. At this time, I was out of the military and very low on funds, but they told me if I paid even a dollar a month they would accept that, which I did until they told me to pay all or nothing. Now, it has been turned over to the U.S. department of Education. My question is, "Is this still a valid loan since the school went bankrupt? {They have since reopened under a different name). And do I have to pay it since the school never held up their end of the bargain by helping me get a job?
