clearing a debt i don't owe

What is the name of your state? Michigan

I was charged with a debt in 2002 for 2700.00 that I did not owe. this past july the debt appeared on my credit report in the amount of 42,000.00, consequently causing my credit score to drop significantly and thus being declined for a mortgage on home i wanted to purchase. I have since received conformation and documentation that I infact do not owe this debt.

What action can I take against the original submitter of the debt for causing this huge blemish on my credit history and causing the loss of a home purchase? Also, what kind of attorney would I need to hire?
