Collecting debt of deceased spouse

What is the name of your state? Ohio

While my wife was alive she had several medical bills of which my insuranc ecovered part. After she died two large outstanding debts were being pursued by collection agents. They are addressed to her. Am I obligated to pay these?

Spouse's debts

You are only obligated to pay to the extent of your deceased wife's assets. In other words, you can only inherit what's left after the debts are paid. If the assets are insufficient, then the creditor is stuck.

Deceased wife's medical bills

I sent a death certificate with the bill to one collection agency and they sent me the bill again with no explanation (addressed to her). If I tell them I am not paying this will they go back to the original creditor or provider such as the hospital and see if I signed something that said I am obligated? I had the insurance and they payed their part.
