Collection

What is the name of your state? Illinoise . My wife's dad had opened credit card account using her name and identity by taking her signature. It was long time back when she was living in his house. It all appeared to be in good faith. But now we found out after a long time that he has not been paying it off and now it has a balance of around 5500 in collection. The collection agency is after my wife.
We also received a summonce from the court for a complaint filed by credit card company.

We have also found out that he had taken a loan in her name long time back which he has not paid and we could result in another court summonce.

Can anybody tell me what are my options in this case. Taking to her dad is what I am going to do, but in case that does not works out.

Thanks
Nilesh Pathak.
