Collection of a phone bill

What is the name of your state? Texas

I have a question regarding collections on a telephone bill. I had an account with MCI back in 2001, at one point, I moved and they didn’t service my area, so I had to cancel. Shortly thereafter, they started servicing my area so I utilized them again. The first months bill came in and was double what they’d told me it would be when they signed me up over the phone, they had apparently tacked on some additional services I didn’t order. I called MCI, straightened it out with customer service and got a revised amount to pay, which I did and then promptly cancelled the account.

During the process of running my credit report in June ‘06, I saw an account that was listed as being in collections, it was MCI and had a note on it that I was disputing it. I was floored that this had somehow gotten on my credit report when MCI had never contacted me to let me know there was a problem. I am now getting calls at home from a company who urges me to contact them regarding this matter. I cannot understand the name of the company from the messages, but I believe they are perhaps located in India based on the accent of the callers.

My problem is this, the account was closed almost 4 years ago, I have absolutely no record any longer of who I talked to when I originally got the amount due revised and I have no record of the bill or my checks, etc. I’m unsure of what to do because I know that I cannot prove what was discussed with MCI in 2001.

Can someone give me some insight as to how I should proceed?

If the last time anything was paid on this MCI bill was 2001, then it is past the SOL for TX (4 years). If that is the case, I would send them a letter and tell them to cease and desist as the debt is time-barred.
