College class charges for unattended semester..??

What is the name of your state? Tennessee, college in Florida

In Spring 2001, I withdrew from a state university in Florida (during the drop/add window...so no payments liable).
I was able to "drop" all but 1 class online, then (per the site's instructions), I mailed in a letter to withdraw from the last class (and so from the college).

I never really thought about it until later....when I got a collection statement for 2 classes and fees. I battled w/ the university for a few years...they lost all of my paperwork re: this matter, would transfer me from dept to dept, and were no help to me at all... And I also have F's on my transcripts for classes I never should have been registered for...
Now, I have moved several times since 2001...I have lost a lot of my belongings...including my records for my university contacts/letters from a few years back...yes, shame on me...

The collection company got this a little over a year ago., and I filed a dispute. I have followed up with them consitently, and they only just now gotten the response from the school showing "proof" of what I owe...only a year later! (The collector's told me that the school did not have a time limit to get that info to them, and that they weren't getting a response from the school either.)

Can I do anything about this? I can't afford for this to go on my credit report (upcoming refinances and what not)...but I don't want to pay for classes I shouldn't have to...and my GPA is messed up!

THANKS!!!!!

call your teachers

the same thing happened to me!! call your teachers if they are still around. The school has to have a reccord of that year. and if it appears that you went to the class and alll .. honestly the best thing to do.. is call student reccords and ask for that year/class roster. and if they cant hellp you. ask them who the teacher was. and if they are still around. you need to call up the teacher. Ask them to write a letter saying yuo never attended the class. then the letter has to go to the school and the school has to write a letter to the colllection agency. it is crucial for you to keep track of all these paper work.. but honestly its your fault.. you should have cleared that a long time ago, but... for right now.. go to the teachers....

The school hasn't been helpful in giving me the teacher's information. I never attended the classes, not even one. I have no idea who the teachers are. The school actually mentioned contacting them, but then wouldn't tell me who they were or how to contact them (to see if they could show records that I didn't attend)...mind you, typical class size is over 100 students...attendance was rarely taken & this was 4 years ago.

I take my part of the blame, but I have been trying to get this taken care of with the school for over 3 years....I have been lied to, transfered around, etc in that time by the school. Things happen, and I have lost all of my past paperwork and computer from that time....incl this stuff.

They would send me requested paperwork 10% of the time, lost it when I sent it in...once told me it was taken care of (it wasn't!)...every dept said what I was told by another was false then transfered me to another or told me they'd send me paperwork...only to be told that was the wrong dept when I'd call about not getting it....
