What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? OR

I just wanted your imput on the following. A friend of my husband told him that a few years ago he and his wife had problems with debt. They had many credit cards and car loans and couldn't keep up. So they got rid of thier cars and bought junkers and then started paying on one card. They called the other companies and told them that they are paying off 1 debt at a time and will be paying them but not right now. He said he was told that if anyone would take them to court that nothing would happen cause they are paying on one of the debts( and it was like $300-$400 a month). This sounded odd to me. So I was just wondering if what he is saying is for the most part true or a load of bull.
