The days of the screaming debt collector are over

The Return of "Mr. Nice Guy" in Collections

January 3, 2006
The Debt Marketplace, Inc. 8300
The days of the screaming bill collector are officially over, according to suburban collection agency owners Dino Romano and Greg Haldeman, who are ushering in a kinder, gentler method of collecting.

"It's the old adage, you get more with honey - or whatever it is," Haldeman, president of Confidential Credit Consultants Corporation in Naperville, IL, said.

Romano, owner of Wilkison & Romano, LLC in Aurora, IL, concurred.

"You are going to get more results by educating consumers than by threatening them," he said.

Debt Collectors

I think screaming doesn't make the person pay any faster. Nice is OK.. but I suppose a debt collector can't be too nice.. I had appendex surgery about 8 years ago.. No insurance (heartless cost cutting employer).

I won't say this much, but I had one fantastic collection agency handle my bill. The bill was broken down to 4 collection agencies. I always made sure the nice agency was paid first..

I think the important thing for debt collectors to understand. When the collector makes the first initial phone call is to listen to the other person's story without interruption... it sort of tells me the agency cares (or seems to care) about my situation.

I really get annoyed if the collection agency tells me "They don't accept payments, either all or nothing"... Then they rattle off all my credit card numbers from my credit report and tell me I have enough credit on these cards.. Why can't you put $500.00 on this card, $400.00 on this card, and $300 on this card? So I am going to max out all my cards and pay 20% the next 20 years to cover this debt..
