Debt collection from college

What is the name of your state? New York

Three years ago I got an athletic scholarship to a university in NY, I dropped out half way during the first semester. I had received a collections letter about 2 months ago stating that I owed the school $8,000.00. I called the collections company and told them that I had a scholarship and if I dropped out half way during the first semester why am I being charged $8,000.00.
This morning I checked my bank account and saw that it was zero. I called the bank and found out that some kind of legal hold was placed on my account for over $1,000.00. I called the school and found out that they do not have the account anymore and that it was forwarded to an attorney. I then called the attorney's office and left a message.

I also called the coach who gave me the scholarship and he is saying that he never issued a full scholarship, that is was a partial schlorship and since it was over 3 years ago he cannot remember the details too clearly.

Can an attorney just place a legal hold on my account like this? I haven't even received any correspondence from him before informing me that any kind of judgement was made against me. I would really like to know what my options are.

No, he cannot. He must get a judgment against you first.
