Debt Collector PROBLEMS!!!

What is the name of your state? NH
After reviewing my credit report I contacted a collection agency by mail to request validation of a debt posting of $176. They replied with paperwork stating I owed $175.40. The letter only said pay this amount within 30 days. There was no mention of after payment this is what we'll do...
I sent a letter certified mail with a check for $175.40. In the letter I outlined what they reported to the credit bureau vs what they told me I owed and said that by cashing my check they agree to give me a letter stating it was paid in full and update credit bureaus. Today I received the letter I sent to them and my original check (they stamped for deposit only on the back and then blacked out their account number) without a letter explaining why they sent everything back to me.
I want to resolve this matter - what gives and what is my next step?

Send a check without trying to dicate terms. You owe the money -- just pay it.

And why would you expect such a mention ?? They will NEVER to that, they're goal is to collect money - period.

As DC said, you can't dictate terms and they clearly are telling you they do NOT agree and will do no such thing by returning your check.

You're next step is to pay it - its only $175. Unfortunately you're stuck with the negative for 7-1/2 years. You MAY succeed in getting it deleted with a dispute to the credit bureaus, but you'd better wait 3-6 months before you try it.
