Debt Not MineWhat is the name of your state? NY Been receiving phone calls and now a letter requesting payment from an account from 2000 that is not mine. Does not show on my credit report. What should I do? Should I ignore it? Is there anything the collector can do, i.e. lien on home? BTW, company indicated that it does not show on my credit as a result of the age. | Correct, it's too old to be reported. It's also too old to be sued upon-- the statute of limitations in NY is 6 years. You can do 1 of 2 things: - 1 - demand validation of the debt, make the prove it's valid and yours, or 2 - send them a cease and desist letter telling never to contact you again as the debt is time-barred. You can find more info on validation here: www.creditinfocenter.com. You'll also find more info on the cease and desist letter there.
