Debt obligation after spouse's death - WI

What is the name of your state?Situation occurred in Wisconsin. My paternal grandmother passed away in Jan. 2000 and was receiving a pension of $510/mo. Death certificate was filed yet automatic deposits continued to be made. Although nobody was aware of it, my father continued to withdraw the funds, on a monthly basis, up until his death in Feb., 2005. There was no clause in the pension that it would pass to children. The pension payer is now demanding that my mother, repay the funds from the time of my grandmother's death. Is my mother liable for this debt or can the accumulated funds (March thru June) simply be returned?
