What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Nebraska
If a spouse passes, leaving behind debt that was in there name only, not another soul signed to or authorized on the account.....Who is responsible for paying off those debts, if anyone?

**A: generally it is the estate first, and maybe the remaining spouse depending upon the circumstances.

For any debt, the estate is available to pay.

For certain debts, ones which were necessary for the deceased's life (medical care, rent, food etc.), the husband is as liable.
