Default dates, SOL, credit reporting

What is the name of your state?Ma

When does the 7 year SOL for credit reporting begin? When the default date of the original creditor began or when the account is sent to collectioni or when it is reported to the credit bureau?

I have an old utility bill that I thought would be off my report last month but it has been handed to another agency and is now on my report twice with two different dates neither of which is the date that I defaulted on paying the bill. It was from 1998 and the first reported or reported since dates are 2002 how can I make sure it clears off my report?
