Filing a Lien on a boatWhat is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? N.C.. I performed an inspection of a boat in N.C. in April. The boat has since been moved to NY, where the owner( my client) lives. I have not been paid and would like to either go to Small Claims or file a lien. Going the Small Claims route entails my going to NYC where my client lives. Can I file a lien remotely without using a legal service? How long would the lien remain viable? Thanks |

| Unless your contract for services specifically provides your the right to place a lien, you will have to obtain a court judgment before you can place a lein on the boat. A court judgment would provide you with many other options to collect what is owed to you.
