Help Paying Medical Debt

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

My boyfriend was in a terrible car accident 4 years ago in which he had massive injury to his back and and is still going through court with gieco trying to get a settlement for the accident. He lost his job because of the accident. He was a martial arts instructor and had his own buisness for over 10 years and had had to shut down everything in his life because of his injuries. He has a over $10,000 dollars worth of medical bills that he cannot pay for....does anyone have any advice on how to get the medical bills covered...or how to get them reduced??? We are in desperate need...

Is that 10k the only debt he has? Has he tried to deal with the creditors directly?
