Did the 'visitor' leave any documents ?? In NY they can just tack a summons to your door or just toss it in your yard and service is considered complete. If no documents were left, they will most likely return at a different time.

Call the county courthouse and find out for sure if a lawsuit has been filed. If it has, she will eventually be served, even if its thru the mail. She will have to file an Answer to the Complaint and probaby appear in court. Appearing for court would likely be her last chance to negotiate a settlement. If she blows off court, she will automatically LOSE and they'll have a judgment against her. Then they will go after bank accounts, non-exempt property, and wage garnishment.
