How long does a debt collector have to validate a debt?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Georgia

Back in August, I got a letter saying I owed over $42K to AMEX. I have never even had an account with AMEX but apparently Bank of America sold some debt to them. I had 30 days to respond to the letter. I sent them a letter on August 26, 2009, asking them for validation of the debt.
How long do they have to validate the debt because I got their letter today and it is dated October 19, 2009.

There is no time frame for them to validate. If your request is received within 30 days of first contact, then they have to stop collection actions until they validate.

AMEX (American Express) does not buy debts from banks. You may want to check your credit report, you may have been a victim of identity theft.
