How to settle a debt with a ca?Indiana. I would like to settle a credit card debt when I return to the US. My problem is, I have no access to my credit report here abroad without a credit card, something I no longer have. I know there is a free site, but they do not accept IPs outside the US. I have no idea what collection company owns my account now, I just know one does because my mom gets calls occasionally. The statue of limitations is in no danger of running out unfortunately. Last time I checked, the debt was 2300. I am sure that before it was sold, it was probably close to 2600-2800. I would like to settle for 2000. How can I do that? I just read that Indiana is not a state that accepts restrictive endorsement. How else can I go about doing it? |

| Q: How else can I go about doing it? A: Negotiate a settlement with the holder of the debt.

| And get the settlement agreement IN WRITING, BEFORE you send payment. |

| Sorry, I meant, what is the best way to go about doing it with the collection agency? Should I stick to only writing them instead of doing it over the phone or is there any one tactic that is particularly good for negotiating with them or? I read threatening bankruptcy, but that won't work. Besides student loans that are all up to date and fine and have been, I don't have any debt besides this credit card that is in collections. I don't think any lawyer or credit counseling service would take the case either for such a low amount. |

| You can negotiate over the phone, just don't send payment until you have the final agreement in writing. |
