I am being sued by Capital One for a credit card debt under $900. What do I do?

I live in Missouri and I am being sued for a credit card debt under $900. I plan on going to court because I hear it's the best thing to do. What should I expect?
I am a full time student and basically have nothing to my name except current student loans. Even my car isn't in my name. Basically, I have nothing they can take to pay off the loan. Can they touch my student loans?
What can I expect in court? I don't even have enough money to hire a lawyer.
ANY kind of information will be helpful. I can't go to jail, right??

If you go to court you should be able to expect that they will find for Capitol One and you will be found responsible for the debt. You cannot go to jail for owing money in this country (oh the unfairness of it all).

Then Capitol One will have a judgment that they can wait years to collect on (such as when you graduate and get a job). That will really impress an employer.

I don't know why you think going to court is your best option. You could just actually get a part time job and pay them BACK the money you owe them. That would be the honorable and decent thing to do.

Oh..I digress...you are actually asking for advice on how to get out of paying what you justly owe them.

See...this is a form of stealing, and that is why I do not understand why they don't put people in jail when they try to pull a stunt such as you are doing.

More debt for all the rest of us to pay. HEY!! Enjoy all the stuff you bought with your card!! UGH!!!!

Get a job. Well, that may become more difficult since a lot of employers run a credit check when they want to hire an applicant. Let's see..... all other things being equal - I have one applicant with a stellar credit record and one who doesn't take care of their financial responsibilities. Who do I hire?

If/when you get a job after you graduate, you may not be able to find a place to live because most rental agencies do a credit check to see if you've stiffed anyone.

The parents quit paying your car insurance because you're now out on your own. You'll find the insurance companies will either turn their back or charge you out the wazoo because if you don't pay your bills then you aren't a good financial risk which turns into an insurance risk.

Then you find your soul-mate, want to marry and have a couple of kiddos. Can't buy a house because all that financial mess just keeps on following you.

Go flip hamburgers, deliver pizza, do something to get this resolved NOW or it will haunt you for years to come. And ditch the credit card.

What a brilliant idea, YEAH, RIGHT. The prison system is overpopulated due to dirt bags like murderers, pedophiles, sex offenders, violent repeat offenders and the list goes on and on. What we REALLY need is for the taxpapers to foot the bill to put debtors in jail.

Sorry, there is no DEBTOR'S PRISON. NEWGATE has been closed for a long, long time.

Where in my post did I ever state that I didn't want to pay them? I asked what I can expect in court, genius. I know I owe them, I haven't used the card since when I got laid off and couldn't pay it. I bet you've NEVER made any mistakes in your life, huh.

Ok genius. You can expect to have a judgement against you. You can expect to pay way more than the $900 you owe. You can expect this to ruin your credit for many years to come. You can expect to one day look at your bank account or your paycheck and say "what the heck happened here..." and when that happens ~ you'll know

On $900 your monthly minimum payment was somewhere in the neighborhood of 20 bucks. You could have kept up with that, ok genius.

This debt can hound you for years. It can go from $900 to double and triple that amount with interest and fees in a nanosecond. It could keep you from getting a job when you graduate, from being able to rent an apartment, buying a car, etc. Bad credit impacts virtually every aspect of your life.

You need to get a job and pay it as quickly as possible even if it's a part-time job. The fast food restaurants always need help.

BTW, you never said that you did want to pay them. What you said is you had nothing for them to take. Anything you own for the next few decades is up for grabs when they get a judgment.

Yep. It's a whole lot easier to take care of it on the front-end than to get whacked on the back-end (no pun intended!) She'll be back here complaining when her bank accounts get grabbed to satisfy the judgment.
