I'm charged legal fees in addition to my Debt?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? California

I'm being sued by a debt collector for around 6000, and I want to settle it before the hearing etc., but they are charging me an extra 5000 for misc. legal fees and interest.. is this normal practice? Should I expect to be able to lower the amount, or should I just suck it up and try to make a deal for a payment method that will work for me.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Read your contract to see if this is proper...

Of course there are going to be legal fees and interest, you didn't think Guido the strong-arm collector worked for free did you

You had your opportunity to pay as agreed and for whatever reason, you failed to do so.

Is 5,000 a reasonable legal fee that they are charging me on top of my 6,000 debt? I'm willing to pay but I just don't want to be scammed because I don't trust these guys. I'm seeing a lawyer tomorrow morning through this Lawyer Referral Service but I want to get as much information before I see him because I don't know how much he will be able to help me either. Any extra knowledge on this.. that before I even go to court with these guys they're already charging me legal fees to settle? I know these people have not done 5,000 worth of work, although I admit I am guilty.. I have not been stable enough to pay.. and now I am.. I just want to do the right thing, and not be treated like an animal by these money hungry people.

We have no way of saying one way or the other. We don't know what type of debt this is or how long your debt was outstanding (just a few questions). Speak to the attorney, but please make sure to take all your information with you.

How old is the debt? that would also be a contributing factor as to why interest could be high.

Three years defaulted??? ...and you are wondering why so high??? I am going to stick my neck out here and assume you weren't paying anywhere close to 0%. 11k on a 6k debt that has gone unpaid for three years ~ the amount you are being sued for is not out of this world.

so you all would say that my 6000 debt on top of 5000 dollars should be legitimate? I just want to make sure it's normal.. I'm not a ****en scumbag.. I want to do the right thing.. I had finished college and it was hard to find a job and etc.. I have money now and want to do the right thing.. i just know that these collection agencies are making a lot of money.. and i want to make sure i'm treated fairly as well.

what wireless is saying is that your credit card debt is probably not 6k, there was interest accruing on that debt for the past 3 years, and it probably was not at 0%, it was probably close to like 28% since you were in default. So 5k in added interest and fees sounds about right.

I had read somewhere that collection agencies dont' have a right to put interest on a debt they bought.. is that correct? the debt was originally like 3 thousand.. and then was at 6000 when my bank sold it to the collectoin agency.. now the agency is adding another 5000 on top..

are you sure this agency actually BOUGHT the debt? or were they just hired by the credit card company to collect. Two totally different animals.

that's a really good point "dfromnli" .. i just want to make sure this is legitimate and i'm not being scammed.. this late in the process.. do you all feel that there's no room for negotiating a lower settlement.. and i should just try to work towards negotiating a realistic payment method.. i want to pay this over two years.. 2,500 at a time.. i know i'm just throwing this all out there.. but do you all think this will work out?
