Question

JUdgement

What is the name of your state? Texas
My wife had a judgement filed against her 9 years ago concerning some equipment she purchased for a business she was starting. The company managing her company stole money and she had to close the business. When she tried to return the equipment she was refused and payment was demanded. Eventually a judgement was filed. We have heard nothing since concerning payment from the company or any collection agency. I know that Texas has a SOL of 10 years and that the information goes off your credit after 7. How does one find out information about a judgement's status? It is quite possible that the company with the judgement has itself gone out of business. Would such an event render the judgement harmless?
Thanks G. Hoffpauir

Q. I know that Texas has a SOL of 10 years and that the information goes off your credit after 7.

A. That is true. But, judgements can usually be renewed once. If renewed, there goes another 10 years.

Q. How does one find out information about a judgement's status?

A. Call the court clerk and ask. Or better, go down to the courthouse and ask to see the judgment file.

Q. It is quite possible that the company with the judgement has itself gone out of business. Would such an event render the judgement harmless?

A. The failure of the business would not in itself render the judgment invalid. It is possible that the judgment was sold or conveyed to someone else.

State of Texas
I retrieved the information concerning my wife's judgement. It does appear as though it was sold as there are two "grantors" listed. The date filed shows to be 03/08/1996,the "type" shows to be "REL" and there is a "film code". My question now is what does "REL" mean?

I don't know. Did you ask the clerk?
