We live in CT. We want to reinstate our mortgage, but there are ~3K in questionable charges from a contracted lawyer/debt collector (a firm with many consumer complaints and investigated by CT’s AG for fraudulent billing). When we asked our Mortgage Lender for itemized charges or receipts from the lawyer/debt collector, the Lender claimed attorney-client privileges and said if we have a dispute with the fees being assessed, we have to go to the lawyer/debt collector they hired.

1. Is the lawyer/debt collector required to provide us itemization of their charges and receipts if we requested them?
2. Can lawyer/debt collector charge us for documenting their bill?
3. Since the Mortgage Lender is passing the charges along, do they have a legal responsibility for verifying the charges are legitimate?

Thanks!
