michigan debt

What is the name of your state? michigan

I have to respond to an attorny that has notified me Via a court officer. I was presented with a summons last thursday and have to respond with in 21 days. should i respond to the collection agency or the attorny representing them? what is the best course of action. i want to pay off this debt but it is substantial. any advice on how to proceed would be much appreciated.
