Michigan Debt Summons

What is the name of your state? Michigan
Today while I was at school my wife was served a summons for a debt. My question is a two part question.
1. I know I owe this debt, but the amount seems higher than I remember, what do I do?

2. If I do nothing and a default judgment is entered against me what does that entail?

Any help would be appreciated.

Very common that the amount is higher, since they are able to to recover penalties, legal fees, etc.
You can certainly ask them to validate their claims.

Not much... they simply send an order to the court. The court signs it. They then use the legal remedies available to seize your non-exempt property and/or garnish your wages.

Why has he spent over $1.35M in legal fees to block disclosure... rather than spend $12 for a VALID birth cert to settle the matter? The 'certificate' he has presented doesn't qualify to get a drivers license, wouldn't allow a child to qualify for Little League, or for a real citizen to get a US passport!

Here is a great place to read up on your rights.

And they may be able to help you in general if you contact them.

Also, see if you are able to file for Exemptions. You wouldn't want them coming to your residence to take all of your personal property, would you? Filing for Exemptions can also protect Social Securty income, among other things.

And I am getting TIRED of your continual posts giving links to local legal aid or public assistance sites... often when they are not warranted.

Simple... if you are an attorney or have sufficient legal experience to provide ACCURATE legal advice to posters, certainly do so.
Your continually providing a simple link to the posters state or local legal aid societies is ignorant and not of any REAL benefit to the poster.
