Motion for Judgement on the Pleadings

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Massachusetts
A law firm is attempting to collect a credit card debt from me. They did not show up for a Case Management Conference so we rescheduled it for Feb 27 because my wife would be out of town for two weeks. The lawyer has filed a motion for judgement on the pleadings for Feb. 10 knowing that she would be out of town. I have two questions:
Does a law firm need a license to collect this debt? The law firm says no.
Does my wife need to be present at the Feb. 10 hearing? She is the only named defendant although it is my debt as well and I am handling the research.
