National acct adjuster

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? Missouri.

Ok, so I am trying to find out what the debt is that appears in my credit report. The date opened is 2008. I have a feeling that this is more than 10 years old and from another state, however, I am unable to get more information about it. I called the collector once and she wanted my SSN. I have been told that giving that information would reactivate the debt or something like that. Recently I got married and am trying to clean up my credit, so I am willing to pay my past debts. But the rude phone treatment I received has me hesitant to start sending money to National Account Adjusters.

Any advice? Aside from the obvious (pay your debt, which I plan to, after I find out what the debt is)?

Sorry if this is a repeat post, I was unable to find any useful information with the search tool.

Do not give out your SSN whatsoever to any party that calls you, or to any party you call unless you called a party you fully trust via a phone number you already know is correct for them. Every legitimate debt collect assigns an account number and provides that in their written letter. Your references to the account should be by that account number. If you never got such a letter, tell them to send one. If they called you, they have your phone number on the account, and can match up the correct account via the phone number. They can get that from the ANI data on a toll-free line you call back on, so your phone number is not secret. As long as your current address is on your credit report, they have that, too.
