Necessity of life?

What is the name of your state (only U.S. law)? OR

I received a call yesterday from a collection agent telling me that I owed over $2,000 for an ambulance bill for my now deceased husband (this was to bring him to the hospital after he passed). When I told her that we were legally separated at the time and legal separation prevents me from being responsible for any debt incurred after the date, she told me that CA has something called a "necessity of life" law and therefore I was responsible.

However, I filed in OR and have resided here for over a year and 1/2, so would CA laws even apply in this case, and am I still responsible for this debt? Any help would be great.
