why the plaintiff should have the court decide the case on the facts. Whomever the plaintiff is, they have asked the court for 'summary judgement' or a decision based on the case as presented to-date.

The affidavit is a statement from someone ( not necessarily the plaintiff but normally so) as to why the court should grant the motion.
