New Husband's old medical bills

We live in California now, but this happened in Alabama.
In 2003, my now husband went to the student health center for a mental health appointment. The psychiatrist believed that he was a threat to himself and arranged for him to be hospitalized. Knowing he didn't have health insurance, (and also not being in a mental state that is condusive to wise decisions) he tried to 'escape' going to the hospital by leaving the student health center before they could transport him to the hospital. Well, after a little help from law enforcement, he spent 3 days in a high-security mental health ward, and was released with 11,000 dollars of bills. It was a terrible Valentine's Day.
On the plus side, he now is educated about his disorder and is taking medication to manage it. However, he is now my husband and as I understand it, his debt is my debt. I will want to buy a house in the next few years, but I don't know if we will be able to without paying his debt.
He still feels unobligated to pay the debt because he was taken there against his will. I have heard of hospitals 'forgiving' the debt, but that is usually before it is taken to collections.
Any advice or insight would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance

I'll say what no one else wants to say:

Yes. the judgment is probably going to interfere with your buying a house. My guess is that your husband's choice to deny responsibility for the debt is related to his disability. You have a difficult time.

I hope you have or are in the process of learning about your husband's disability and adjusting household management to work around it.

No, just spacing a little.

Yes, the debt is probably going to interfere with your buying a house. For $11K, don't be surprised to see them sue and convert the debt to a judgment soon.
