Not Sure what to do....

What is the name of your state? I live in New York

I am 26 years old, and I have about $10k worth of debt that is not student loans. Three years ago I became ill with an incurable auto-immune disease, and since then I have not been able to work. I applied for SSI last year, but even with the support of my dr. I was turned down. I have no income. All of the credit cards/my cell phone- accounts since 3 years ago have been charged off. I get at least 5 or 6 letters, and 20 calls from debt collectors each week. Im not sure what to do. Should I file for bankruptcy? I really dont wish to, but Im not sure of any other choices I have.
I have no income to barter with concerning these debt collectors, and I have no wages to garnish. I know at least one has a judgement against me.
A friend told me that bad debt falls off of your Credit report in 7 years, and that I should just wait the 4 more years and start building credit again
BUT
I have been reading lately many stories of the debt being sold and sold, and sold until it is sold to a company that will hunt you down and make you pay some way, some how. Doesnt a company hunting you down for their money affect your credit too? I mean that is what the creditors are doing to me right now, would just ignoring them cause me bigger problems later?

Can anyone offer some advice? What should I do?

I would file for bankruptcy, it is easy and will stop all your problems right this minute. You are what I would see as the perfect case for this. If you do not want to file because you are afraid of your credit being hurt, guess what it already is!!! You will actually have better credit long term by filling BK as the lenders know you can only file once every seven years.
