My daughter rented an apartment in 2000. She broke the lease in Jan of 2001. At that time they billed her for 45 days for breaking the lease. The apartment company only accepted cash or money orders for payment. She purchased the money order by taking money out of her checking acct.
Four years later they are saying they never received payment and have sent it to collections. We have contacted her former bank and they said they only keep copies of money orders for three years. The only thing we can get is the amount and date she had deducted from her checking acct.
My question is this. Since we are unable to get a copy of the money order from the bank because they only keep there records for three years, does she have any options? Does she have to pay it again. Even though there has been no contact from the apartment complex in 4 years. If she disputes it what will happen then? Her credit is perfect and she would like to keep it that way. Please Help
