Problems with GF's past

What is the name of your state? Alabama

Hi - My girlfriend's ex ran up $5,000.00 on her credit card and never repaid it. We have a civil court ruling in her favor for the full amount. He's completely "under the radar," though: no assets, lives with family, and no garnishable wages (he gets paid in tips). How many years will we have to collect on this? Any ideas on how we might be able to do so? Does this in any way give us any leeway with her creditor?

Also, this situation has ruined my GF's credit. Mine is almost perfect. How will this affect our finances if we get married? Will my property be vulnerable to collection of her debt? Will I be able to apply for a mortgage by myself? Please help! Thanks.

"Does this in any way give us any leeway with her creditor?"
No.

"How will this affect our finances if we get married?"
Yours, probably not at all. It will take her awhile to get hers back.

"Will my property be vulnerable to collection of her debt?"
If you put her name on any property (land, money, vehicles, etc.), it may.

"Will I be able to apply for a mortgage by myself?"
Yes. This is done all the time.

I am NOT a creditor/debtor lawyer. Maybe some of them will give you more specific info.
