Question

Progressive Financial

Washington

I was just contacted a moment ago regarding a "student loan" from many years ago. I have never received a bill after 13 years and was not aware of it. I walked into the University Accounts Payable department 6 years ago and paid everything off in cash. (I have a receipt) No one ever mentioned this loan at that time and it never appeared on my credit report. Now, they just called me at work to tell me the amount has nearly tripled.

I used to live in Africa and always kept an active address in the United States. Are they supposed to make an effort to contact me? Am I looking at garnishment or something? Can I not protest all of the penalties?

This seems unfair.

What can I do?

If you were contacted by a CA (which I'm assuming you were), demand that they verify the debt. If you paid it in full, and have the receipt, I don't see what the problem is. Get an address from the CA, don't talk to them over the phone, and send them a verification demand.
