Question regarding Credit Report informationWhat is the name of your state? Arizona I am not sure if I am in the right folder if I am not please excuse Me and point me in the right direction We were recently turned down for credit and requested a copy of our credit reports. Mine has all the correct information on it but my husbands has two things on there that are not his. 1) a dell computer - orignal amount 3500 in a collection acct that is wanting 7477.00 2) and MBNA credit card for 1500. both of these are not his. one has a cosigner and it is his grandmother. They are very both from the same time period in the 90's. Only thing that we can think of is that his grandmother and his brother whom he was living with at the time took his information. (wouldn't be unheard of they did this to his mother as well) We have contacted both companies and they said there was nothing we could do about it which I know is a farse. What would be the steps that we would take other than disputing with the credit reporting agencies to remove these items from his credit reports. Thank you for your time. |

| Here is what you will need to do to clear the report. 1. File a police report. This is identity theft. 2. Send a certified letter to the collection agencies and creditors in question -- sent it certified mail return receipt requested. Include a copy of the police report. Say "I dispute this debt" and "my identity was stolen -- see the attached police report". 3. Send a certified letter to each of the 3 credit reporting agencies. Say the same thing. 4. Sit back and wait. These things can be hard to clear off your credit. Identity theft is a major problem in our country. Put yourself in the shoes of the creditor. They think they got the right guy. They don't know any differently until you tell them formally. Even then they probably won't believe you because there is just so much scamming going on. This is why the police report is so important -- filing a false police report is criminal. If the items to not come off the credit report, you've only got two choices. The first is to sue the creditors and the CRAs -- let the judge sort it out. The second is to sit back and wait until you are sued and then file a countersuit and conduct discovery to force the creditor to prove up the debt. Now, if you are loathe to file a police report that might cause problems for a relative -- well, get prepared to pay -- both in terms of negative impact on your credit and cash out of your pocket to the creditors. |
